Ethnic fractionalization, governance, and loan defaults in Africa

چکیده
We present a theoretical model of moral hazard and adverse selection in an imperfectly competitive loans market that is suitable for application to Africa. The model allows for variation in both the level of contract enforcement (depending on the quality of governance) and the degree of market segmentation (depending on the level of ethnic fractionalization). The model predicts a specific form of non-linearity in the effects of these variables on the loan default rate. Empirical analysis using African panel data for 111 individual banks in 29 countries over 2000-2008 provides strong evidence for these predictions. Our results have important implications for the conditions under which policy reform will enhance financial development. JEL classification: G21, O16

Constructing Ethnic Fractionalization Indices
In recent years, ethnic fractionalization has emerged as a central variable in quantitative analyses of outcomes ranging from economic growth rates (Easterly and Levine, 1997) and the quality of governance (La Porta et al, 1999) to ethnic conflict (Kay et al, 2000) and the frequency of coups d’etat (Londregan and Poole, 1990). Almost all such analyses employ, either alone or in combination with...
متن کاملEthnic Fractionalization in the Growth and Development of Sub-Saharan Africa
This study examines the relationship between ethnic fractionalization and human development in developing nations, specifically sub-Saharan Africa. It differs from previous studies on ethnic fractionalization in that it focuses on human development rather than solely on economic development. In conjunction with the argument that sub-Saharan Africa’s increased ethnic fractionalization drasticall...
متن کاملMeasuring Ethnic Fractionalization in Africa
In most studies of the impact of ethnic diversity on economic growth, diversity is hypothesized to affect growth through its effect on macroeconomic policies. This article shows that most measures of ethnic diversity (including the commonly used ELF measure) are inappropriate for testing this hypothesis. This is because they are constructed from enumerations of ethnic groups that include all of...
متن کاملElectoral Systems and Ethnic Identity:
This study investigates the effects of electoral systems on ethnic fractionalization in democratic states. The paper addresses the following two questions: (1) does a country’s electoral system have an effect on its level of ethnic fractionalization; and (2) if there is such a relationship, is this effect uniform across all electoral systems or do certain electoral systems effect levels of ethn...
متن کاملFractionalization and Long–Run Economic Growth: South Africa as a Time Series Case Study
Recent cross sectional growth studies have found that ethnolinguistic fractionalization is an important explanatory variable of long-run growth performance. In presenting variation over time in a number of social, political and economic dimensions, this paper adds longitudinal evidence on a range of variables that have been linked to long run economic development. Given South Africa’s history o...
